Measuring Standard Opening Width
The standard used to measure gates is: “Opening width”
- “Opening width”is the measurement of the gap that needs to be filled by the gate.
- The gate manufacturer needs to adjust the frame size of the gate to make sure that the gate, including its hinges and closing mechanism fits inside the opening width measurement
Length measurement when using opening width standard
- The length of the gate is thus the distance between two posts or between two walls
Height measurement when using opening width standard
- The gate manufacturer will allow 50mm at the bottom to allow the gate to open and close freely without dragging.
Frame size when using opening width standard
- The frame size of the gate will always be smaller than the Opening width to allow for the hinges, closing mechanism and 50mm bottom space.
Measuring Instructions For Residential Gates
- Gates are manufactured to the dimensions of the opening that it fills
- Opening dimensions are indicated in red
- Always supply the opening dimensions to the gate manufacturer
- The gate frame outside dimensions indicated in green, are determined by Van Schoor and takes into account the hinges and closing mechanism.
- Walls are often skew – always supply the shortest opening length
- Use spacers when installing the hinges as indicated in black to fill the gap and line up the gate horizontally
- Van Schoor deducts 50mm in frame height to allow for a ground to frame gap as indicated in orange
- Always check the path of the opening swing of your prospective gate. Inspect for obstacles or an incline in ground level that could impact the opening swing of the gate.
